My Story: Art with Purpose
Kate Alexander transforms discarded materials into meaningful works of art — merging creativity with sustainability. Working as an artist and educator for over twenty years, making is as important to Kate as her beach walk resets! Each piece is crafted from resources that might otherwise end up in landfill, turning waste into both beauty and awareness.
“My overwhelming desire is to inspire environmental change through artistic expression — to encourage a deeper connection with our planet by reimagining what already exists and giving it new life. I also need to love what I am creating - art without joy is futile.”
From her small studio in Dorset, Kate works with reclaimed glass mostly from old and broken greenhouses, rescued book pages, and found objects — including ocean plastics collected along the Jurassic Coast during her regular beach walks. Driftwood gathered from the shore often becomes the foundation for her glass creations, grounding her work in the very environment that inspires it.
“I’m endlessly in awe of the ocean — by its shifting hues of blue, green, and gold, the rhythm of returning waves, and their quiet power to cleanse and renew. Nature’s resilience reminds me of her determination to reclaim balance despite our interference. If my art can spark reflection, highlight our impact, and still bring beauty into your home, then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.”
